Zentral sind dabei Fridolins Erlebnisse in der ersten Nacht und ihre Verarbeitung danach, in einer erzhlten Zeit von knapp zwei Tagen sowie die Traumerzhlung seiner Gattin. Die Forschung weist vielfach darauf hin, dass zwischen den Zeitgenossen Sigmund Freud und Arthur Schnitzler eine Doppelgngersituation' besteht. Damit ist gemeint, dass Sigmund Freuds Entwicklungen und Forschungen im Werk von Arthur Schnitzler literarisch gespiegelt werden. Diese Verschrnkung von Wissenschaft, konkret der Psychoanalyse, und Literatur wird in der Sekundrliteratur kritisch abgrenzend betrachtet und selten an konkreten Werken und ihrer Analyse bearbeitet. (...) Die Thesen, die dieser Arbeit den roten Faden geben, lauten darum: 1.) Arthur Schnitzler schafft durch sein Erzhlen an den Hauptfiguren der Novelle, dem Arzt Fridolin und seiner Gattin Albertine, eine Allegorese der Theorie von Sigmund Freud ber den psychischen Apparat (Es, Ich und berIch), wie sich dies in Freuds Schriften Jenseits vom Lustprinzip' (1920) und Das Ich und das Es' (1923) ausgefhrt findet. Schnitzler maskiert' mit der Sprache seines Erzhlens Freuds Instanzenmodell der Persnlichkeit und die Theorie der zwei Haupttriebe, Eros (Lebenstrieb) und Thanatos (Destruktionstrieb). Anhand einer Textstruktur und Motivanalyse wird gezeigt, welchen Einfluss Freuds Denken auf die erzhlerische Gestaltung der beiden Protagonisten hat. 2.)
