Der Autor stellt Schwierigkeiten der Deutschen dar, die nationalsozialistische Vergangenheit als ihre eigene Geschichte anzunehmen. Diese Schwierigkeiten stellt er in den Zusammenhang der Diskussionen ber den Nationalsozialismus und ber Erinnerung als Grundbegriff der Geschichtswissenschaft. Ausgehend von W. Benjamins Begriff der Erinnerung entwickelt er ein Modell fr die Interpretation von Erinnerungen im Nationalsozialismus. Dieses Modell erprobt er an Zeitzeugen des Nationalsozialismus, die zusammen mit ihm in einem Gesprchskreis ein Jahrzehnt lang an ihren Erinnerungen gearbeitet haben. Dabei werden Chancen und Grenzen der Erinnerungsarbeit im Gesprch zwischen den Generationen deutlich. Ein Ergebnis der empirischen Untersuchung besteht darin, da es in der Erinnerungsarbeit mglich ist, Einstellungen zu berwinden, die whrend der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit geprgt und unreflektiert bis in die Gegenwart fortgesetzt wurden. Das Buch hat die Intention, ber Schwierigkeiten des Erinnerns aufzuklren und zur Entbindung bisher unterbliebener Erinnerung beizutragen. Es richtet sich an alle, fr die die Auseinandersetzung mit der nationalsozialistischen Vergangenheit noch nicht abgeschlossen ist, insbesondere aber auch an Menschen, die in Schule, Hochschule und Erwachsenenbildung arbeiten. Der Autor, DiplomSoziologe, Dr. phil., ist Lehrer an der OlofPalmeGesamtschule in Hiddenhausen.
