Una lectura contempornea de Brecht (no aliada, por tanto, a los cantores del nuevo orden triunfante) es inviable sin la meditacin de un nuevo concepto de revolucin. El intento de definicin de este concepto en la propia produccin brechtiana constituye el impulso que ha dado lugar a estas pginas. Indudablemente no es en los dramas y puestas en escena guiadas por el principio de extraamiento (habitualmente clasificadas como marxistas y que hoy no podemos dejar de considerar clsicas) donde se sita la investigacin, sino en un momento anterior: aqul en que una revolucin otra vez era an posible, cuando Brecht se present como alternativa efectiva a un expresionismo que haba cado de las utopas a los sueos. Brecht y el Expresionismo recorre a nivel esttico, dramtico y escnico los lugares de la confrontacin (la produccin del joven Brecht y las creaciones de aquellos que a partir de 1912 construyeron la vanguardia alemana), para acabar localizando en los lehrstcke (obras didcticas) un momento de equilibrio entre la experimentacin y la forma, entre el individuo y la colectividad, entre lo artstico y lo ideolgico, entre lo efectivo y lo utpico.
