In den 1950er Jahren begann HansWerner Seiffert im Auftrag der Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften mit der Bearbeitung des Wielandschen Briefwechsels. In den Jahren 1963 bis 1983 wurden die Bnde 1 bis 5 verffentlicht. Seit 1982 hat Siegfried Scheibe mit seinen Mitarbeitern neue editorische Grundlagen erarbeitet und erstmals vollstndige Sammlungen des Materials angelegt. In den Jahren seit 1992 konnten in rascher Folge die Nachtrge zu den ersten fnf Bnden und die ausstehenden Apparate der Bnde 3 bis 5 sowie zwlf Bnde mit BriefTexten und zwlf Bnde mit Anmerkungen publiziert werden. Insgesamt liegt die historischkritischen Edition nun in 18 Bnden (insgesamt 32 Bchern) vor. Die als Nachtrge (Band 19) ergnzten Neufunde der letzten Jahre sowie ein Gesamtregister (Band 20) beschlieen diese Ausgabe.
