Product Description The rock art of southern Morocco can be divided into three main phases. The petroglyphs of the oldest phase, which includes the periods of the Bubalin and the Bovidien, cannot be associated with any ethnographic or written records and are commonly considered testimonies of a cultural change brought on by desertification. This volume studies the rock art of selected sites in the middle Draa Valley and proposes a revision of this inadequately substantiated interpretation. German text. Review 'Review English ''To summarise, Renate Heckendorf has written an exemplary study of thorough empirical rock art archaeology with very strong and commendable methodological parts. Her study sets a mark for the northwestern end of the Sahara and further studies of petroglyphs have to be gauged according to the frame set in this study. This book is particularly inspiring for the specialists but perhaps not so much for the many amateurs who continue to play an important role in generating new knowledge about Saharan rock art.''In: Journal of African Archaeology. Vol. 7 (2009) 1. S. 127130.' Contributor Biography English Currently, Renate Heckendorf is receiving a scholarship from the Commission for the Archaeology of NonEuropean Cultures (Bonn), a department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI, Berlin). This enables her to study the socalled 'PseudoBovidien' rock art of SouthMorocco, and especially the possible relationships between its artefact representations and metal finds from Europe. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Tubingen in 2005. Her research dealt with the 'Bubalin' and 'Bovidien' rock art of the Moroccan PreSahara and was published in 2008. Renate Heckendorf has studied prehistoric archaeology, classical archaeology, philosophy (University of Hamburg) and history of art (University of Aixen Provence). She has obtained her M.A. from the University of Hamburg. Her practical training was completed by fieldwork (survey, rescuearchaeology, protection of monuments and sites) in France, Germany, and Morocco. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD, Bonn) has awarded her several grants. She has also qualified as a translator (DipTrans IoL English/French, London). She has specialized in the translation of (academic) papers on archaeology.
