James Arnold From the Back Cover Albert Camus travaille Caligula partir de 1938. La maturation est lente et il ne termine cette premire version qu'en 1941. Mais il modifie sensiblement la pice entre 1941 et 1943. Outre des problmes artistiques et de dramaturgie, il y a t pouss par les vnements de l'poque : la guerre et l'occupation. Au Caligula nietzschen de la premire version succde une oeuvre qui souligne davantage la lutte ncessaire contre la tyrannie. La pice devient moins romantique, et plus politique. C'est ce Caligula de 1941, rest indit, que publient aujourd'hui les Cahiers Albert Camus. Une postface de A. James Arnold explique la gense d'une oeuvre qui occupa si longtemps Camus et montre quels liens existent entre Caligula et la plupart des oeuvres de jeunesse de l'crivain. About the Author Albert Camus nat Mondovi, en Algrie, le 7 novembre 1913. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, il intgre un mouvement de rsistance Paris, puis devient rdacteur en chef de quotidienCombat la Libration. Journaliste, mais aussi philosophe, romancier et dramaturge, il reoit le prix Nobel de littrature en 1957. Pour ce "Franais d'Algrie" pauvre et sans racines, le tragique est indissociable de l'aspiration un bonheur qu'il sait aussi prcaire que le soleil de midi. S'il voue sa vie entire au thtre (Caligula,L'tat de sige,Les Justes), ses romans (L'tranger,La Peste,La Chute) et son oeuvre de journaliste l'imposent comme l'un des principaux acteurs de son temps.Il meurt en 1960 dans un accident de voiture, laissant le manuscrit du Premier homme inachev.
