CarneRossA Poundian figure who summed up the possibilties of a new eras response to an old and rich poetic tradition, Callimachus (ca. 305 B.C.ca. 240 B.C.) was the first learned scholarpoet in Western literature.The leading poet of the Alexandrian school, Callimachus served as a model to Vergil, Catullus, Propertius, and Ovid. With remarkable grace and sensitivity to nuance, Stanley Lombardo and Diane Rayor provide the first translation of Callimachuss works into the American poetic idiom. Lombardo and Rayor translate the six hymns and sixtyone epigrams that are the only complete extant poems of a writer credited with having produces some eight hundred books in his lifetime. In addition, they offer a generous selection from among the surviving fragments, inclduing the prologue and selected passages from the Aetia (The Origins), Callimachuss greatest achievement in narrative verse. Theiry annotations elucidate the poets rich mythological allusions; an introduction places Callimachus within his cultural and poetic contexts.

As a huge fan of ancient literature, I was thrilled to get my hands on Callimachus' hymns and epigrams. The selection of fragments is well curated and the translations are clear and engaging. It's a great addition to my collection, and I love the insights into ancient Greek culture!

Good Read but Lacks Depth
I enjoyed the excerpts included in this selection, but I felt like it didn't go into enough depth on Callimachus' works. Some context or commentary would have really helped. Still, it's a decent introduction if you're new to his poetry.

Packaging Issues on Arrival
I can't deny the beauty of Callimachus' verses, but my book arrived with a bent cover, which was disappointing. I expected better packaging for something like this. The content is lovely, but I wish they’d take more care in shipping!
