Este trabajo es el resultado de una investigacin realizada con el objeto de identificar cambios en el medio ambiente bucal durante el tratamiento de ortodoncia, con un seguimiento de 30 meses. Se evaluaron diversos factores de riesgo a caries a travs de marcadores clnicos (superficies dentarias cariadas, perdidas u obturadas (CPOS), ndice de placa de OLeary y pH de placa); marcadores salivales (saliva estimulada y en reposo, capacidad amortiguadora, pH y sangre oculta); y conteos bacterianos (Streptococos mutans y Lactobacilos); as como tambin los hbitos higinicodietticos de los pacientes que utilizan aparatologa fija en denticin permanente. Se ha reconocido que este tipo de tratamiento tiene el potencial de ocasionar dao a los tejidos duros y suaves de la cavidad bucal, ya que se incrementan los conteos bacterianos debido al ambiente favorable por el acmulo de placa y residuos alimentarios que incrementan el riesgo a caries, aunado a la dificultad de la remocin de placa dentobacteriana por medios convencionales de higiene oral.
