La fractura de cadera en los ancianos es una patologa de elevada incidencia y prevalencia que genera unos costes personales, sociales y econmicos muy importantes. La incidencia de la osteoporosis en Espaa es muy elevada, y debido al progresivo envejecimiento de la poblacin actual y en los prximos aos, se espera que aumente el nmero de las llamadas fracturas por fragilidad, entre las que destacan por su importancia las fracturas de extremo proximal de fmur. Aunque se trata de un tema ampliamente estudiado y objeto de debate continuo, existen menos trabajos en nuestro medio que analicen la evolucin de esta patologa en una poblacin determinada a lo largo del tiempo. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido describir la evolucin de la incidencia, factores de riesgo, los tipos de fractura, el tratamiento, las repercusiones funcionales y la mortalidad en la poblacin atendida por nuestro centro hospitalario a lo largo de ocho aos con la finalidad de comprobar nuestros resultados en su tratamiento, y conocer todos aquellos factores sobre los que podemos actuar y modificar, para tratar de instaurar medidas ms eficientes para el tratamiento de esta patologa.
