About the Author Ana Mara Machado naci en Ro de Janeiro, Brasil, en 1941. Cuando era nia soaba con ser artista de cine. Con el tiempo su vocacin se dirigi hacia la pintura, arte que estudi en Ro de Janeiro y en Nueva York. Ms adelante se gradu en Lenguas Romances y se doctor en Lingstica. Fue profesora (en las reas de literatura, periodismo, radio), periodista y trabaj en una librera. Ha sido una crtica permanente de la literatura infantil. En los ochenta se dedic a escribir, traducir y reflexionar en torno a la literatura y la lectura, lo que le llev a realizar numerosas conferencias alrededor del mundo, artculos en diversas publicaciones y a ser jurado y presidente (en dos ocasiones) del Premio Hans Christian Andersen. Siempre escribi: cartas, diarios, reflexiones, relatos... pareca una actividad que le acompaaba siempre. Comenz a publicar relatos breves para la revista Recreio en los aos setenta. Segn escribi su compatriota Lygia Bojunga Nunes (ganadora del premio Andersen en 1982): 'Leyendo a Ana (...) una de las cosas que ms me atrae es la presencia constante de una formidable visin crtica de nuestra sociedad y del mundo'.
