The earliest refernces to Peter reveal a pregospel Christianity which had not yet come to believe that Jesus had lived and died in the recent past as described in the gospels. What emerges from critical reading of the sources is that the real Peter and Paul were bitterly divided, but that later traditions tried to represent them as working harmoniously together, and presented Peter as companion of the newlycomposed gospels. Peter began to be linked with Rome in the second century A.D., only much later does this legend become elaborated so that Peter is the sole founder of the church of Rome and thus the first pope.In the final chapters, Professor Wells describes how leading church spokesmen have themselves accepted the nonhistoricity of much of the New Testament, and shows the varied conclusions for Christian faith they have drawn from this disturbing development.

This book dives deep into the reliability of early Christian testimony. It's well-researched and provided me with a new perspective on the New Testament. Really appreciated the author's thoughtful analysis!

Hard to Get Through at Times
While the topic of biblical reliability is crucial, I found the writing style a bit dry. It made it hard to stay engaged throughout. Still, it has some valuable points that make it worth the read if you're patient.

Interesting but Not for Everyone
I found some parts of this book engaging, but it got a bit dense in places. If you're really into theological debates, it could be a good fit, but I struggled with some sections. Worth a look but maybe not for casual readers.

Great for Serious Scholars
I bought this book for my theology class, and it has proven to be quite insightful. The arguments presented about the New Testament's reliability are strong, and I can see it sparking great discussions in my group.
