Traductor tambin, entre otros varios autores, de PessoaLibro del desasosiego (Seix Barral, 1984) y El regreso de los dioses (Seix Barral, 1988) y PaveseEl oficio de vivir (Seix Barral, 1992, 2001), ense en las universidades de Puerto Rico, Leiden, Venecia y Washington. Su obra potica, traducida, entre otras lenguas, al italiano, portugus, francs, griego, sueco y alemn, se inici en Una lengua emerge (1950), bajo el signo del postismo, y actualmente se halla reunida en los tres grandes volmenes de Poesa editados por la fundacin Jorge Guilln. Su obra en prosa se halla reunida en Los trabajos del espritu (Seix Barral, 1999). Es autor tambin de los ensayos Juan Ramn Jimnez y la pintura (1974), Dante y su obra (1979) y Las cenizas de la Flor (1987). Tuvo a su cuidado la edicin de Guerra en Espaa de Juan Ramn Jimnez (Seix Barral, 1985).
