La NTBo botulnica es producida por distintas especies del gnero Clostridium (C. botulinum, C. argentinense, C. baratii y C. butyricum). El gnero incluye un grupo de bacilos con relaciones taxonmicas muy inciertas. La gran heterogeneidad fenotpica de cepas de la especie C. botulinum da lugar a numerosos esquemas de clasificacin, basados generalmente en propiedades metablicas, antgenos somticos y antigenicidad de las NTBo. En este trabajo se realiz parte de identificacin gentica, utilizando el gen ARNr 16S, de cepas provenientes de C. botulinum y especies afines. Consideramos, adems, que las caractersticas morfolgicas y bioqumicas son en parte la expresin gentica de los microorganismos estudiados, por ese motivo se usaron varias de ellas para su clasificacin. Los resultados muestran entre otras cosas, que existen, por ejemplo, Grupos monofilticos entre cepas de C. botulinum tipo A, B y E y C. sporogenes; Cepas de botulismo del lactante que forman un subgrupo con caracteres exclusivos dentro de las cepas de C. botulinum tipo A estudiadas. Cepas de C. botulinum, tipos A y F, que estn ms relacionadas con C. tetani.
