El nuevo concepto de salud, definido por la Organizacin Mundial de la Salud (OMS) como el estado de completo bienestar fsico, psquico y social y no a la mera ausencia de enfermedad ha ampliado su campo de estudio y, son cada vez mayores los aportes desde las ciencias sociales. Esta definicin permite visualizar el cambio operado en la concepcin mundial de la enfermedad. Actualmente, no se puede hablar de un nico factor que desencadene la enfermedad sino, de numerosas causas que interactan e influyen sobre el individuo. Entre los determinantes principales pueden destacarse los factores materiales que definen el entorno de las personas, especialmente aquellos referidos a la calidad de la vivienda; la procedencia y suministro de agua; las caractersticas de los servicios sanitarios y la capacidad de subsistencia de los hogares. Dentro de este marco, el presente trabajo tiene como principal objetivo realizar una caracterizacin demogrfica, social y econmica de la poblacin, segn reas Programticas, en la Provincia del Chaco para el ao 2001, con el fin de identificar las reas ms crticas para lograr una mayor equidad en la implementacin de polticas y programas de salud.
