En fait, et pardel cette rception convenue dont le clbre peintre allemand Caspar David Friedrich (17741840) a t l'objet, l'auteur s'attache retracer l'histoire d'une crise. Certes personnelle elle affectera les dernires oeuvres du peintre , elle est surtout esthtique, car exemplaire du choc entre la tradition classique de la vue de la nature et la problmatique romantique de la vision intrieure. Elle se situe entre deux ples de l'oeuvre friedrichienne : le Moine au bord de la mer (1810), o le paysage lmentaire, dynamique d'une disparition presque totale de la nature, semble signifier l'homme son viction, et la Grande Rserve (1832), o l'homme, l'inverse, peut intrioriser un paysage qui est tout la fois une mditation sur la nature et l'illustration du 'savant chaos' de la philosophie romantique. Entre ces deux bornes de l'volution du peintre, c'est la progression d'une vritable esthtique de la mlancolie qui est suivie travers le commentaire d'autres oeuvres, telles Brouillard (1808), Femme la fentre (1822), la Mer de glace (1824), le Mont Watzmann (1825), et, surtout, Bateaux au port le soir (1826), contemporain de la crise personnelle de Caspar David Friedrich.'Catherine Lpront.
