La presente investigacin indaga sobre la relevancia de los factores polticos en la negociacin de tratados de libre comercio (TLC) entre pases desarrollados y pases en desarrollo, tomando como referencia la experiencia del TLC entre Chile y Estados Unidos. Las ventajas comerciales no fueron las nicas motivaciones de este tratado, pues se destacaron resultados de tipo poltico como: el TLC mantendra el modelo econmico liberal que se vena desarrollando en Chile desde los aos 80; el acuerdo podra ayudar a la reinsercin del pas en la arena internacional luego del periodo de dictadura en el que estuvo aislado en materia poltica; se perseguan certezas jurdicas consideradas necesarias para la proteccin de un pas pequeo en desarrollo ante posibles arbitrariedades de un pas desarrollado en temas como el comercial; y el tratado simbolizara un sello de calidad que certificara a Chile como un pas confiable.
