Estudi en La Habana en el Seminario de San Carlos donde se gradu de Bachiller en Leyes, ms tarde practic la docencia y el periodismo. En La Habana asisti a la Tertulia de Domingo Delmonte y public en la Gaceta Cubana su novela La joven de la Flecha de Oro. El 20 de octubre de 1848 fue condenado por una comisin militar, un ao despus escap de la prisin y viaj a los Estados Unidos. Poco despus fue nombrado redactor en jefe de La Verdad, peridico de Nueva York;aunque en 1858 fue amnistiado y pudo regresar a La Habana. En 1861 regres a los Estados Unidos y trabaj en el peridico La Amrica, de Nueva York. Termin de escribir Cecilia Valds en 1884 y muri el 24 de octubre de 1894 en dicha ciudad.
