Around 1920 the Hague Gemeentemuseum began to build up a collection of Islamic ceramics and glass, alongside its existing collections of Delftware and Hague porcelain. Its purpose was to illuminate the technical and artistic influence which Islamic ceramic centers had indirectly exercised on Dutch production. The present form and scope of this collection provides a wellrounded survey of Middle Eastern ceramics, a branch of the arts which is more than 1,000 years old.Ceramics from the Orient features pieces revealing the wealth of ceramic art assembled over the years. Beginning with a secondcentury earthenware jug to a 17thcentury fritware tile from Iran, there are 90 superb examples from the Middle and Near East, including Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
