C'est le 5 mars 1894 que Pierre Lous composa la premire Chanson de Bilitis. Assez rapidement, il conut l'ide d'attribuer ces pomes en prose une potesse grecque imaginaire, qui aurait vcu l'poque de Sapho. En mai 1894, il se ravisa cependant, jugeant la mystification inutile, comme en tmoigne un 'avantpropos' indit que nous reproduisons. Mais l'ide tait trop sduisante, et surtout trop conforme son esprit la fois rudit et moqueur, pour qu'il ne l'adoptt point.Bilitis ressuscita si l'on peut dire, et Lous alla plus loin encore. Il inventa un second personnage, le professeur G. Heim, archologue et philologue allemand, qui aurait rcemment publi une savante dition critique des posies de Bilitis, textes indits dcouverts par lui lors des fouilles effectues Chypre...
