Mais il prend aussi le temps d'observer les moeurs des "Persiens", d'interroger leurs savants et d'explorer les hauts lieux de la Perse antique. Ses affaires en Perse termines, il devient ngociant la cour du Grand Moghol et parcourt l'Inde o il achte des diamants et du musc.De retour en Europe et pressentant la rvocation de l'dit de Nantes, il se fixe Londres. Anobli par Charles II, il continue commercer avec l'Asie tout en travaillant au rcit de ses voyages. Il y rapporte cette sentence persane qui rsume sa double existence : "La gloire du marchand est en sa bourse, celle du savant en ses livres."Dirk Van der Cruysse est professeur l'universit d'Anvers. Il a publi chez Fayard une biographie de Madame Palatine (1988), ses Lettres franaises et les Mmoires et Lettres de voyage de sa tante Sophie de Hanovre. Se consacrant depuis la littrature des voyages du XVIIe sicle, il est l'auteur de Louis XIV et le Siam (1991), de Choisy, androgyne et mandarin (1995), et d'une dition du Journal du voyage de Siam de l'abb de Choisy (1995).
