'C'est l'histoire d'un jeune homme, nous dit l'auteur, qui a crit une lettre le matin, et qui attend la rponse jusqu'au soir ; elle arrive et le tue.' Vigny prend le parti de la posie contre la socit, ce qui est une nouveaut dans l'histoire de la littrature. partir de l, on aura deux publics : les happy few et les autres. Il faut aussi souligner le rle de la femme dans cette pice. Le jeune pote est, en effet, aim par une crature anglique. C'est elle qui permet Chatterton de devenir un vrai pote. La socit l'emporte, et empche le couple de s'unir. Il s'agit donc d'une pice la fois sentimentale et trs intellectuelle : Vigny prche pour un 'drame de la pense'. Loin des foules du thtre romantique ou shakespearien, il crit une tragdie pure, celle du dsespoir moderne. C'est lui qui a invent le pote maudit.
