A gripping account of the Chechen struggle for independenceThe war in Chechnya left us with some of the most harrowing images in recent times: a modern European city bombed to ruins while its citizens cowered in bunkers; mass graves; mothers combing the hills for their missing sons. The product of investigative and onthescene reporting by two established journalists, Carlotta Gall and Thomas de Waals captivating book recounts the story of the Chechens violent struggle for independence, and the Kremlin politics that precipitated it. Exploring Chechnyas complex and bloody history, the work is also a portrait of Russias failed attempt to make the transition to a democratic society.

Deep dive into a tumultuous past
The depth of research in 'Calamity in the Caucasus' is impressive! It’s clear the author knows the topic inside and out, which provided a lot of context to the Chechen struggles. I feel like I have a better understanding of the region now.

Great content but slow pacing
While 'Calamity in the Caucasus' is packed with useful information, I found the pacing to be a bit slow. It took me a while to get through the first few chapters, but it did pick up eventually. It’s worth the read if you stick with it!
