Die von der ehemisehen Industrie entwiekelten Sehaumstoffe haben angenehme Vor teile, sie dienen uns als Verpaekungsmaterial fUr den sieheren Transport empfindlieher WertgegensUinde, als leiehte aber stabile Formteile in vielen Bereiehen des alltagliehen Lebens, als Isoliermaterial in Kiihlaggregaten und als Warmedammungsmittel in der Bauindustrie. Auf der anderen Seite ist allgemein bekannt, daB gerade dieses leieh te Verpaekungsmaterial dazu beitragt, unseren Miillberg in unverantwortlieher Weise zu erhohen, und daB aus Sehaumstoffen noeh jahrelang die sogenannten Fluorehlor kohlenwasserstoffe als Gase entweiehen konnen, die zur Zerstorung der Ozonsehicht beitragen. Das zweite Beispiel betrifft den hohen Fleisehkonsum bei uns und in anderen Indu strielandem, der als Zeichen des verdienten Wohlstandes gilt. Abgesehen davon, daB er weit iiber unsere natiirliehen Bediirfnisse zur Deekung des EiweiBbedarfes hinaus geht, tragt er dazu bei, daB beispielsweise in Mittel und Siidamerika Tropenwalder gerodet werden, urn Weideland fUr das fleisehproduzierende Vieh oder urn Aekerland zum Anbau von Viehfuttermittel zu gewinnen. Mit dem Versehwinden der tropisehen Regenwalder werden die Bodenerosion und der Treibhauseffekt dureh Erhohung der Kohlendioxidkonzentration in der Atmosphare gefOrdert. Bei uns im eigenen Land verursaeht die Giille aus der Massentierhaltung eine waehsende Belastung des Grund wassers dureh Nitrat und gefahrdet so unsere Trinkwasserversorgung."
