Les recherches rcentes ayant renouvel l'tude de cette priode, on a voulu tirer de l'oubli un auteur trop longtemps mal compris. Le lecteur trouvera donc ici, accompagne du texte latin (selon l'dition de J.M. WallaceHadrill) et d'une abondante annotation, la traduction de la partie originale de la chronique et de ses continuations carolingiennes, qui poursuivent le rcit jusqu'en 768. Une introduction substantielle dfend l'hypothse d'un chroniqueur unique crivant vers 660, situe la chronique dans son contexte historique et l'apprhende la fois comme une oeuvre d'histoire et de littrature. Une tude spciale est consacre la langue de l'auteur, tmoin des mutations que connat le latin au milieu du VIIe sicle. Olivier Devillers est un spcialiste d'historiographie romaine et Jean Meyers de langue et de littrature latines du Haut Moyen Age. L'un et l'autre enseignent l'Universit Paul Valry (Montpellier III).
