About the Author Geboren am 6.6.1606 in Rouen; gestorben am 1.10.1684 in Paris. Mit 18 Jahren wurde er Anwalt, mit 22 Jahren Richter; sein Ehrgeiz galt jedoch dem Verfassen von Gedichten und Schauspielen. 1635 wurde er Mitglied einer Gruppe von fnf Autoren im Dienst des Kardinals und Ministers Richelieu. 1636 wurde seine Tragdie "Le Cid" uraufgefhrt; sie hatte einen so groen Erfolg, da Ludwig XIII. Corneilles Vater in den Adelsstand erhob (wodurch der Sohn als schon adelig geboren galt). 1647 wurde er in die Acadmie Franaise aufgenommen.
