La Matemtica es una ciencia capaz de adaptarse y aplicarse a una infinitud de problemas reales, de la vida cotidiana. El sector de la industria de la pizarra es un sector con un importante impacto econmico para la zona de Galicia (Espaa) y durante su proceso de elaboracin, se localiza la fase de clasificacin de placas de pizarra de cara a su posterior comercializacin. Es este proceso el origen de este trabajo, donde se presenta la Tesis Doctoral de Javier Martnez Torres que desarrolla un sistema clasificador de placas de pizarra automtico mediante tcnicas de visin artificial y aprendizaje automtico. As, mediante un sistema hbrido 2D3D lser escner que extrae la mayor cantidad de informacin objetiva de las placas de pizarra, y posteriormente de un modelo estadstico de aprendizaje automtico, se ha diseado un prototipo capaz de realizar la clasificacin de las placas de pizarra en tiempo real y de un modo objetivo, simulando as el criterio del experto en el rea, el cul es el actual responsable de realizar dicha clasificacin.
