Claude is sent off on a plane to his greataunt's home in the Arctic, and his parents promise him a surprise upon his return. The colorful cartoon illustrations are rife with delightful details: the books strewn on the polar bear's floor include Catching the Abominable Snowman and a flight attendant is shown demonstrating the use of an inflight oxygen mask. The large spreads show the rosycheeked cub engaged in all sorts of wintry activities though he eventually longs for home. Unfortunately, the fact that the youngster is sent off to a relative's home without being prepared for the arrival of a new baby is unsettling and jarring. Harriet Ziefert's Waiting for Baby (Holt, 1998), Lizzy Rockwell's Hello Baby! (Crown, 1999), and Catherine Anholt's Sophie and the New Baby (Albert Whitman, 2000) are excellent alternatives to this story.Linda M.
