Websites have made it easy to play in fantasy leagues. Scoring is automatically tabulated and results are a mouse click away. Email and online message boards facilitate trade proposals, waiver wires and trash talk. For many, online fantasy football is the only fantasy football they've ever known. However, fantasy football did not start with the internet. In 1988, there was no internet, but there was fantasy football. Without online automation, the glue that held a fantasy league together was the commissioner. Every week the commissioner poured over sports sections, totaled points and sent out results via snail mail. The commissioner was the heart and soul of the league. In 1988, one such commissioner, Mike "Zeke" Dreznes chronicled the season. Although the internet evolved fantasy football, the spirit, dedication, and camaraderie of league members remains the same.
