La capacidad que tienen las clulas madre de multiplicarse, renovarse, diferenciarse y producir potentes factores de crecimiento tanto in vivo como in vitro ha revolucionado la biologa molecular y celular generando un creciente inters investigativo. Las clulas gliales de Schwann, del sistema nervioso perifrico, forman las envolturas de los axones mielinizados y cumplen importantes funciones, entre ellas, favorecer la regeneracin de los nervios que recubren, son esenciales para la recuperacin neuronal cuando el nervio perifrico es lesionado, puesto que producen los factores trficos necesarios para que este proceso se lleve a cabo. Su proliferacin y crecimiento depende de factores qumicos (ej. Neuregulina), algunos producidos por las neuronas. Obtener, cultivar y cocultivar estos dos tipos de clulas, es un reto en el campo de la medicina regenerativa que abrira la posibilidad de encontrar una solucin biolgica para mltiples patologas que cursan con dao y degeneracin del tejido nervioso. Este trabajo fue realizado como tesis doctoral para la Universidad de Valladolid con la acertada tutora del doctor Manuel Gayoso Rodrguez.
