Del Halliday had originally bought his range from Spot Sherill of the Double S Circle, in "Stampede at Avalanche Pass." Sherill assumed that the lack of water on that range rendered it useless, but with some strategically placed dynamite, Del uncovered an underground river. Now Sherill wants his range back, and when words fail to convince Del to sell it back to him at the original price, he starts plotting other means of persuasion. "Cold Trail" recreates the ranching community around Tamarack, a town at the end of a major railroad spur. Construction is suddenly delayed because the route has been declared unfeasible. The surveyors have found another route, and though it's being kept secret, rumors abound that the right of way will be across the Spearhead Range cattle empire.
