Over a dozen activity projects are presented with varying implied skill levels. Making pomander balls requires only poking holes in fruit, while many recipes such as cranberry muffins and gingersnaps, must be ovenbaked. The directions for completing the projects also vary in their details. Creating a village mural suggests freehand drawing of building designs onto muslin, but making a sheep actually specifies the number of cotton balls to use. Blackandwhite illustrations and text have red highlights. The "Early Settler Life" series (Crabtree) is an excellent source of information and activities for this period in American history. Each of the 15 volumes contains an index, a glossary, and details a different aspect of early settler life. However, one drawback with the Crabtree series is that metric measurements are used in the recipes.
