La investigacin trata de explicar la supervivencia de una lite mercantil mayorista importadora del interior de la Argentina en la era liberal (18801920) cuando precisamente parecan derrumbarse las situaciones sociales, econmicas y polticas sobre las que se haba asentado una prctica mercantil deudora de estructuras cuasi coloniales. Se analiza el impacto de la modernizacin del sistema de transportes, las posibilidades legalcontractuales, el funcionamiento de la justicia as como las prcticas corporativas de los grandes comerciantes para presionar por determinadas polticas pblicas para reconocer los efectos disruptivos de las reformas y las habilidades individuales y colectivas de los grandes comerciantes para mantenerse como tales. El uso de fuentes primarias de diversa procedencia permite el entrecruzamiento de la informacin con el fin reconstruir el complejo mundo de las prcticas mercantiles y la perspectiva terica en clave neoinstitucionalista posibilita una lectura novedosa sobre un perodo de la historia Argentina y Latinoamericana largamente analizado, desde miradas cuyo nfasis est puesto en los centros de poder.
