U.S. naval officer Commodore Matthew Perry journeyed to Japan in 185354 on behalf of the U.S. government. Perrys mission was to reestablish diplomatic and trade relations with the longisolated Asian shogun, through force and intimidation if necessary. The American government hoped to exploit the riches of the Far East. Perrys mission was a success, and the United States became a leader in international trade.
