La turba, fibra de coco y corteza de pino son los constituyentes principales en sustratos de cultivo, debido a sus excelentes propiedades fsicas, qumicas y biolgicas para el desarrollo de las plantas. Sin embargo, estos productos son cada vez ms caros debido a su costo de importacin y menos disponibles por motivos ecolgicos, resultando la necesidad de aprovechar subproductos orgnicos como sustrato alternativo. Actualmente se est evaluando compost o vermicompost obtenido de subproductos orgnicos de origen agropecuario, forestal o urbano, que son relativamente baratos, locales y fcilmente disponibles. En este trabajo se realiz el compostaje y vermicompostaje de residuos de palma de sombrero (Brahea dulcis)para utilizarlos como sustratos orgnicos, as como su caracterizacin fsica, qumica y biolgica. El vermicompost de palma es una alternativa viable a la turba en la produccin de cultivos, ya que el desarrollo y productividad de chile de agua fue superior que en turba. Lo anterior es de utilidad para productores de cultivos y plantas de ornato quienes requieren sustratos orgnicos, ante el auge en construir invernaderos como alternativa de desarrollo en zonas ridas
