De L'Oiseau noir dans le soleil levant, Claudel disait 'qu'il forme diptyque avec Connaissance de l'Est'. Sans doute songeaitil surtout, en rapprochant ces deux textes, leur 'sujet', cette double dcouverte de l'Orient qui leur donne en effet une apparente unit. De l'un l'autre des passages se font ; le Japon est au coeur de Connaissance de l'Est avec les pomes qui voquent le voyage de 1898 et les souvenirs de Chine affleurent aisment dans L'Oiseau noir. Plus nettement, dans ce recueil, Claudel revient sur certaines opinions, sur certaines ractions anciennes pour les prciser ou les contredire. Les ressemblances toutefois sont plus profondes que n'implique ce paralllisme, plus rvlatrices aussi. Seuls la Chine et le Japon ont retenu Claudel ce point. Certes, il a aim la Bohme, admir le Brsil, observ l'Amrique... Aucun des pays o il a vcu ne l'a laiss indiffrent et de tous son oeuvre garde la trace. Mais il ne leur a point accord cette attention fascine ni pris les dcrire ce soin et ce plaisir. L'Orient l'a touch d'une autre manire que ni le pittoresque ni l'exotisme ne suffisent expliquer. C'est cette fascination, avec les contradictions qu'elle suppose et ses ambiguts, qui donne ces deux recueils leur intrt ; elle en suggre aussi une lecture thmatique qui les claire.' Jacques Petit.
