The First Edition of ConsciousnessRaising was written to raise the awareness of counselors and mental health professionals to the needs, concerns, and issues of individuals and groups from racially and culturally diverse populations. The rapid change in the ethnic minority population and their needs, along with the changes in training and counseling services, are reflected in this newly revised edition. Major changes include: a greater focus on training white counselors; the addition of multicultural counselor competencies; updates on current issues; an expansion of the racial/cultural identity development; a process of identifying stereotypical labels and strategies for managing them; intervention guidelines and strategies; and future considerations in multicultural counseling with discussion on future projections. Thoughtprovoking questions, included at the conclusion of each chapter, have been designed to stimulate discussion and further exploration of ideas and concepts. Numerous strategies and activities are provided that have proven to be successful with ethnic minority clients.
