El objetivo de la presente estudio fue determinar las consecuencias del maltrato infantil en la edad adulta de madres mexicanas. Se aplic un cuestionario a 300 mujeres que fueron seleccionadas al azar de la ciudad de Hermosillo, Sonora. Las preguntas del cuestionario midieron la historia de maltrato, los niveles de violencia hacia la pareja, los niveles de depresin y ansiedad, los problemas de salud, el consumo de alcohol, y el abuso con sus propios hijos. Cada uno de los constructos sealados representaron factores que fueron especificados dentro de un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales donde fueron estimadas sus interrelaciones. La historia de abuso de las mujeres fue considerada una variable latente exgena que directamente predeca a otros cuatro factores: la violencia hacia la mujer, los niveles de depresin y ansiedad, los niveles de salud y el consumo de alcohol; a su vez, se especific que dichos factores influan en el abuso de las mujeres con sus propios hijos. Los resultados indican que la historia de abuso predice a largo plazo el funcionamiento fsico y psicolgico de las mujeres, lo cual repercute en el estilo disciplinario violento con sus propios hijos.
