En las ltimas dcadas del siglo XX, las sociedades occidentales han experimentado cambios profundos a una velocidad asombrosa. La globalizacin, proceso polifactico en virtud del cual los Estados nacionales soberanos dejan de centralizar todo el poder y lo difuminan en una plyade de actores trasnacionales, ha transformado la realidad de Amrica Latina. De la mano de este proceso, las grandes cadenas internacionales de supermercados se instalaron en las ciudades latinoamericanas, transformando y reconfigurando el territorio y modificando los hbitos de consumo y la percepcin de los habitantes. Los grupos de la Gran Distribucin aprovecharon espacios vacantes tras el proceso de desindustrializacin del ltimo cuarto del siglo pasado: los predios que ocupaban las viejas naves industriales de rasgos fordistas fueron ocupados por los super e hipermercados, que impactaron sobre la estructura del comercio minorista y con ello transformaron los rasgos socioespaciales urbanos. El presente trabajo intenta indagar sobre las trazas de ese proceso en un municipio del sur del rea Metropolitana del Gran Buenos Aires: el partido de Quilmes, donde se han instalado varias bocas de expendio.
