El crecimiento demogrfico contribuye al deterioro de los recursos naturales y generacin de la contaminacin. La geomorfologa de la Ciudad de Acapulco, Gro., Mxico, posee la forma de un anfiteatro, y su baha hace la funcin de una cuenca receptora, que con las lluvias arrastra todo lo que se encuentra en los cauces fluviales: residuos slidos urbanos(RSU), residuos de manejo especial(RSM), residuos de microempresas, etc., que terminan depositndose en los diferentes cuerpos de agua (mar y lagunas) donde desembocan, propiciando su contaminacin microbiolgica. El diagnostico y la georreferenciacin de los problemas ambientales, es importante para reforzar los programas de saneamiento bsicos, que es una de las grandes preocupaciones para las autoridades. Caracterizar los RSU, permite establecer polticas para reducirlos y establecer programas de reciclaje. Involucrar a la sociedad con programas de Educacin Ambiental para el uso y manejo de los cauces, permitir reducir la contaminacin, enfermedades y ausentismo laboral.
