La cuenca del Odiel transcurre en su mayor parte a travs de la llamada Faja Pirtica Ibrica (FPI), una de las principales regiones metalognicas del mundo, con unas reservas originales de sulfuros masivos del orden de 1700 millones de toneladas. Asociado a la explotacin de estos yacimientos de sulfuros se origina un lixiviado cido con altas concentraciones de elementos txicos y sulfatos, por el proceso denominado Drenaje cido de Mina (AMD: Acid Mine Drainage). Estos lixiviados producen la degradacin de la mayor parte de la red fluvial del ro Odiel. Entre los aos 20022006 se realiz un estudio del estado de la contaminacin por AMD en la cuenca del Odiel con objeto de caracterizar y cuantificar el grado de contaminacin por drenaje cido de minas y estudiar sus variaciones estacionales. Como resultado principal se obtiene que de los 1149 km de cursos fluviales que posee la cuenca del ro Odiel, 427 km se encuentran afectados por drenajes cidos de minas, lo que supone casi el 40% del total de la red hidrolgica.
