Cooccurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorder: A Practitioners Guide is a basic overview of current evidencebased practices for treating cooccurring disorders. Cooccurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, refers to individuals who have both a mental illness and a comorbid substance use disorder. The literature suggests that utilizing an integrated approach to treatment, treating both disorders concurrently in a program with clinicians specially trained in mental illness and substance abuse, provides the best outcomes for this population. This book is designed to provide clinicians with the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively assess and treat cooccurring disorders.

This guide balances theory and practice really well. I’ve found the interventions suggested to be quite effective in my practice. It’s definitely a must-read for professionals dealing with these issues regularly!

Not What I Expected
I was hoping for a more straightforward guide, but this one was a bit technical for my needs. It’s well-researched, but I needed something that was easier to digest for my team. I guess it just wasn’t the right fit for us.

Great for Continuing Education
I purchased this book for a continuing education course, and it delivered more than I expected. The chapters on dual diagnosis are particularly enlightening. Just wish the print was a bit larger, my eyes struggle sometimes!
