La venta de libros procedentes del extranjero estaba entonces rigurosamente controlada en Espaa, as que el nico recurso posible era despacharlos de contrabando o entregarlos a viajeros espaoles que hubieran cruzado la frontera. Fue as como Luis Gutirrez, un gacetillero espaol establecido en Bayona, y el autor entonces annimo de la novela, se la entreg a alguien que la hizo llegar hasta un librero de Bilbao. La reaccin de la Inquisicin fue la prohibicin e inclusin de la obra en su famoso ndice, que, sin embargo, comenz a circular de forma clandestina hasta alcanzar con el restablecimiento en Espaa de la libertad de prensa un enorme xito editorial. Escrita en forma epistolar, los 'impuros deseos' de un prelado por una joven, que le llevan a encerrarla en los calabozos del Santo Oficio para 'ablandarla', presenta en el cruce de diversas correspondencias la inhumanidad y la depravada conducta del arzobispo de Sevilla y del Inquisidor General, con el propsito de denunciar la intolerancia religiosa.
