It is a fascinating study of a spiritual crisis and of the wisdom and experience of monastic life. William ReesMogg, editor in chief, The Times (of London)Pierre de Calans choice of subject is remarkable not only because it is a profound study of life in a Cistercian monastery, but because he has had no firsthand knowledge as a monk.Elizabeth Berridge in the (London) Daily Telegraph Devout, sensitive, young Cosmas believes that he has a vocation to become a Trappist monk, but the reality of monastic life disappoints him deeply. Fellow monks are hard to live with. The life of the monastery seems worldly. He is disheartened by his own shortcomings and appalled by the weaknesses of others. If he cant live the life, does that mean God isnt calling him to it? What should he do? Many peoplesingle, married, vowed, ordainedask these same questions. Pierre de Calan explores them all in this exquisite tale of a man who learns that sanctity does not mean perfection.

Unfortunately, my copy of Cosmas arrived with some pages damaged and a worn cover. It’s a classic subject I wanted to explore, but the condition of the book made it hard to enjoy. I’d love to see better packaging next time.

Classic with Depth
This book has a lot of depth, and I've enjoyed delving into Loyola's thoughts. I bought it for a friend who's into classics, and they are loving it so far. Just a heads up, it’s a bit dense in places, but that’s part of the charm!

Solid, but Not My Favorite
I found the concepts in Cosmas interesting, but the writing can be a bit hard to get through at times. I think it could have benefited from a bit more clarity in some sections. Still worth a read if you're into Loyola's work though!

I picked up Cosmas: Or the Love of God for my theology class. It's been a fantastic addition and really deepens my understanding of the subject. The writing style is engaging and thought-provoking, making it a great classic to read!

A Must-Read for Devotees
As a fan of religious classics, Cosmas has not disappointed. The insights into Loyola's life and thoughts are beautifully written. This is a book I'll be revisiting often! Definitely worth adding to your collection if you love this genre.
