It turns out that Petie is able to coach Carrie to stardom on the soc cer field and helps Nicole with her lines in the school play. There's plenty of action to keep the story moving. In Costume Party, the girls are hired to create costumes for two sets of twins for the town's annual Founder's Day parade. In The Ghost'' of Hanover Hill the girls paint an old mansion and encounter suspected ghosts. The Most Beautiful Dog in the World is an old showdog turned into a blue ribbon win ner again. The girls solve a mystery and make friends with members of a teen age rock group. These titles are not of great literary value; their strength is that the evermoving plots will appeal to young readers who will want to take on jobs similar to the Super Squad. Characterization of the four girls is weak, but their personalities do emerge as the series progresses. These books should appeal to lessable readers in middle/junior high as well as to interme diate readers. They will be a natural fol lowup to Patricia Reilly Giff's Polk Street School'' series and her Polka Dot Mystery'' series (both Dell).
