From School Library Journal PreSchoolKThese board books feature color photographs with cartoon creatures superimposed onto them. The counting book uses collective nouns to teach numbers, from 'an ambush of 1 tiger' to 'a stand of 10 flamingos.' Readers must count both the photographed and the illustrated animals to arrive at the total number. In Those That Float, cartoon animals explain each line of text through dialogue balloons. For example, 'There are those that float' is illustrated by a pink hippo that elaborates, 'Hippos float in rivers to stay cool during the hottest part of the day.' The concept is a good one, but the language will require further explanation for preschoolers. Two books with lots of child appeal.DeAnn Tabuchi, San Anselmo Public Library, CA Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
