De 1957 1970, Jean Prouv enseigne au Conservatoire National des Arts et Mtiers, le cours d'Art Appliqu aux Mtiers, largement suivi par les professionnels du btiment et en particulier par les lvesarchitectes de l'Ecole Nationale Suprieure des BeauxArts, en mal de connaissances techniques. La composition du cours articule autour de trois thmes, va lui permettre d'effectuer, l'aide du dessin, l'analyse d'un ventail d'objets construits (de la 2 CV Citron aux grands ouvrages d'art, en passant par la maison) qui donne de l'architecture une vision extensive et la sort de ses techniques traditionnelles. Celleci est aborde dans sa ralit constructive, et cherche tablir ou retrouver le lien direct entre l'objet et le processus de matrialisation formelle, issu de la connaissance des matriaux et de leur condition de mise en uvre. Pour sa dmonstration, Jean Prouv puise largement dans sa propre production et finit par conceptualiser, involontairement, sa dmarche crative. Ce livre se prsente comme un essai de reconstitution du cours, partir d'un travail sur les archives accumules pendant 13 annes. Les documents conservs ne permettent pas une restitution in extenso des leons, celleci est donc faite en utilisant les notes de cours des auteurs du prsent ouvrage sur deux annes compltes. A chaque leon correspond un choix de documents originaux. Un texte d'accompagnement, travaillant au plus prs des notes de Jean Prouv, en claire le contenu dans son dveloppement historique. Les objets et ralisations prsents sont restitus dans le droulement de son uvre. Pour conserver l'esprit du cours, une large place est laisse la mmoire de Jean Prouv, en empruntant abondamment ses crits.
