From Kirkus Reviews A humorous story about a boy realizing for the first time what it's like to be in the other guy's shoes: Ben tries hard to be nice when his nerdy cousin Markie visits for a weekend, but when Markie makes him miss out on the leafraking job that would finally have given him enough money to buy a skateboard, Ben takes out his frustration and disappointment on the younger boy. Unexpectedly, Markie lashes back, forcing Ben to think hard about his own behavior. Thatand Markie's surprising chutzpah at an amusement parkcause Ben to notice unsuspected qualities in his weird cousin, and leads to the beginnings of a friendship between them. Though the reading here is easy, Kleitsch neatly renders the foibles of both kids and adults. Some of the cartoonlike b&w drawings show Ben's fantasy adventures, ? la Calvin and Hobbes. Product Description Ben doesn't get along with his younger cousin and he is certain that having him spend the weekend will ruin his plans to get a skateboard From Publishers Weekly When Ben learns that cousin Markie is visiting for the weekend, he is less than thrilled. His disappointed mother urges her son to 'Give him a chance. Rememberyou're not perfect either.' By the end of the fateful weekend, Ben has discovered a little about himself and a lot about his cousin. Kleitsch's lively, authentic dialogue imbues her characters with sincerity and keen imagination. Any reader who has a 'cousin Markie' will recognize the truths of this sportive, quickpaced tale. The story will affirm readers' own experiences and may well enable them to be a bit more understanding the next time their own 'cousin Markie' comes to visit. Ages 79. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. From School Library Journal Grade 13 Ben's chances of buying the skateboard of his dreams slip farther and farther away from the moment his cousin Markie (weirdness personified) arrives for the weekend. Markie has many traits that are less than endearing. He has been known to take bites out of drinking glasses, and his allergy to cats means that Ben's pet is banished to the basement. When Markie lofts a golf ball through the bathroom window, both boys are required to buy replacement glass, diminishing Ben's funds. Subsequent events further reduce his cash flow and drive the cousins apart. When the boys find an escaped pet rabbit and return her for a reward of chocolate chip cookies instead of cash, readers realize that the cousins' friendship, and not the coveted skateboard, is the most important thing. Saving every penny for a prized possession is a situation that most children will relate to, as well as having to adjust to unexpected visitors. Generous doses of humor and blackandwhite cartoon illustrations throughout make this a good title for taking children from easy readers to : chapter books. Lisa S.
