Il y a chez le sculpteur Robert Couturier une justesse du geste, une retenue qui, peuttre, lui viennent de ses origines. N en 1905, dans une famille de meuniers de lAngoumois, sa jeunesse est marque par une passion pour le dessin. En 1920, il entre lcole Estienne dans un atelier de lithographie quil quitte deux ans plus tard. Sa rencontre avec Aristide Maillol en 1928 est dcisive dans sa dcision de devenir sculpteur. En 1937, il se fait remarquer lExposition internationale des arts et techniques avec Le Jardinier sur lesplanade du Trocadro et ses fantastiques mannequins du pavillon de llgance. Mais cest avec le monument tienne Dolet en 1949 que Couturier se libre de la forme classique pour simposer comme lun des reprsentants de la nouvelle sculpture figurative. Son got de la concision le mne trs vite vers une forme calligraphique, qui garde intacte son pouvoir de suggestion. Nomm en 1946 lcole nationale suprieure des arts dcoratifs de Paris, il y enseignera jusquen 1962, avant de rejoindre lcole nationale suprieure des beauxarts.
