The painter and printmaker Craigie Aitchison (19262009) is best known for his spare compositions and intense, luminous palette. His subject matter is equally distinctivesingle flowers, Bedlington terriers, sheep, and crucifixionsrendered, as in the Italian religious icons that he so admired, in simple but powerful forms.
