El pargo flamenco (Lutjanus guttatus) es una especie de alto valor comercial en algunos pases de Latinoamrica; las investigaciones realizadas sobre su biologa, indican que tiene un alto potencial para su cultivo. Actualmente, en la costa mexicana del Ocano Pacfico, los juveniles de pargo flamenco son capturados del medio ambiente y engordados en jaulas flotantes hasta que alcanzan la talla comercial y son alimentados con dietas importadas o para otras especies, ya que en Mxico no existe un alimento comercial especfico para pargo. Para que el cultivo de pargo flamenco sea sostenible, no debe depender de organismos silvestres y debe alimentarse con dietas especficas para la especie; por lo tanto, es necesario desarrollar biotecnologas para la produccin confiable y constante de juveniles y determinar sus requerimientos nutricionales para formular dietas especficas. El presente trabajo describe algunos aspectos del cultivo larvario, desarrollados en el Centro de Investigacin en Alimentacin y desarrollo, A.C. Unidad Mazatln, as como el requerimiento de protena y lpidos en la dieta y la evaluacin de dietas prcticas en el crecimiento de juveniles de laboratorio de pargo.
